Carnage

3DS Max | ZBrush | Unreal Engine | 2009

During my time at AACC, I had the opportunity to work with an exceptional instructor who was building a game design art major from scratch. This project was part of an "Experimental" class where we collaborated with the instructor to establish a pipeline and determine what would work for other students. Our ultimate goal was to learn how to build and integrate custom characters into the game Unreal Tournament 3.

To achieve this, we began by creating modeling a character from scratch in 3ds Max. Once the basic character was modeled we could establish its UV's then export everything into Zbrush. In Zbrush we were able to sculpt and paint higher definition models to then create normal maps, these were all exported back into 3ds Max. The next step involved merging the game's skeletal bone system with our custom character, enabling us to utilize the game's animations. Finally, we developed some code to import our characters into the game.

For my character, I chose to model Carnage from Spiderman. This decision was influenced by the requirement of having a physical toy of the character, and I found it intriguing to recreate and texture in 3D. Although the specifics of the process have faded over time, I distinctly remember falling in love with ZBrush, as it allowed for digital sculpture and offered a higher level of detail with its increased polygon limits.

Once Carnage was modeled, textured, and mapped, I managed to import him into the game. However, due to some issues with the model import, he ended up looking quite chaotic. Nonetheless, considering the time limitations and the learning experience alongside our instructor, we were satisfied with the results.
