The Bus
Oil Pastels | 2011
This project stems from one of my initial art classes at Towson University. The only requirement was to create a memory from our past using oil pastels.
I chose to depict a vivid memory from my adolescence when I visited Guatemala, my step-mother's home country. I distinctly recall taking a bus in the capital city. What stood out to me was its stark contrast to the school buses I was accustomed to in the US. This bus was weathered, with rusty walls and a perforated floor. Bullet holes marked its sides and windows, remnants of Guatemala's civil war. As a young child, it served as a poignant realization of the privileges I had grown up with in the States.
